Word Study—the Schwa

Three quarters of the year down and we are still finding a lot of value in word study. Some students are working with Latin roots, a few with digraphs, but the majority is trying to distinguish words with long vowel sounds and how adding an ending may produce the schwa sound.

What’s been really impressive is that students are helping each other with the sorts. It takes help to pick out the schwa sound in a word like competition. Consequently, watching the students assist each other is making this sort far more manageable for many.
