University of Nevada professor Dr. Steve Gehrke visited Room D4 to move students through the instructional approach, Close Reading. Close Reading has students trying to determine what a text says both literally and figuratively to extract as much meaning as possible. Dr. Gerhke shared two poems including “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost and “Traveling through the Dark” by William E. Stafford.
It was a new experience for the students and it was amazing what they were able to understand and share. Both poems, Dr. Gehrke revealed, were items he used with his college students and the fact that D4’s fourth graders did as well as they did is a testament to their persistence and tenacity.
